What to do and how to protect yourself

You should also contact the three major credit bureaus to consider placing a freeze on your credit:

File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and report the theft to your local police department.
- Use strong, unique passwords for each account. Avoid personal details and don’t store passwords in unsecured apps.
- Look for HTTPS in website URLs before entering personal info. Stick to trusted app stores.
- Limit what you share on social media. Adjust privacy settings and avoid posting your birthdate.
- Protect your PIN and Social Security number. Don’t carry your SSN card or share it unless necessary.
- Shred sensitive documents and use data-wiping software before disposing of digital devices.
- Review your financial statements regularly and report anything suspicious.
